Our new Mainfreight Tauranga Branch is open and ready for business
Tauranga, New Zealand, 14 September, 2020 – Today we open the doors to our brand new freight terminal in Tauranga. As our business continues to grow, we are always looking for ways to better serve our customers.
Making investments that benefit our customers
We invest in world-class facilities wherever possible. We do this to ensure that our people have the very best environment to support them in delivering a high-quality supply chain service. Since we started our Transport operations in Tauranga in 1988, we have grown into a full supply chain service provider, also offering Air & Ocean and Warehousing services.
Our Transport and Air & Ocean teams will be moving in to our new facility. Our Warehousing team will remain at our existing site at Te Maire Street. The former depot will be transformed into an operational warehousing branch, fitted out with racking that can store 7,000 pallets.
The history of the land
Tauranga’s new depot is located on Mangatawa Papamoa Blocks on Truman Road. Legend has it that the land that our depot is built on was once part of the Tauranga Harbour where a family of whales that swam into the harbour became stranded.
A mother and her calf swam into the harbour but found that waters were too shallow. They decided to head back to deeper waters but instead of swimming back the way they came, they headed into the Rangataua arm of the harbour. Tired and thirsty, they stopped at ‘Karikari’ on the eastern shore of Rangataua and drank from an enchanted spring, which turned them into stone.
The father whale came looking for his family. Devastated by what he found he too drank from the enchanted spring, also turning to stone.
Today, this family of whales are known as Mangatawa, Hikurangi and Kopukairoa, which form the maunga in the area.

- 100kWh solar array have been installed with the potential to increase this to 150kWh
- Rainwater harvesting for water use throughout the site
- A truck wash that recycles its own water to be used again and again
